The Department of State has rules to prevent children from being issued U.S. passports without the consent of both parents. It also has programs to protect children involved in custody disputes. They work to prevent a parent from taking a child abroad without the other parent's consent.
After May 7, 2025, only the Enhanced or REAL ID will be accepted to get on a domestic flight (within the U.S.), or to enter certain federal buildings or military bases (unless you have a passport or another federally-accepted form of ID).

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person. An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

If you need your passport faster for emergency travel or another special case, you can send your passport application via Priority Mail Express service and pay the State Department fee for faster delivery.
Passport applications for children under 16 have special requirements.Both parents/guardians must authorize the issuance of a child's passport. The best way to give consent is for both parents/guardians to go with the child when applying.

NOTE: Children's passports are only valid for 5 years. They are not "renewable": When a child's passport expires, you must apply for a new passport for them. When making a passport appointment for a child, please choose "New Passport Only" or "New Passport with Photo Services."

You are not required to get a REAL ID; however, starting May 7, 2025, if you typically use your driver license or non-driver ID (instead of a passport or other form of ID) to fly within the U.S. you probably want a REAL ID. Otherwise you will need to use a valid U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification. The Standard New Jersey driver license can still be used for driving.

Please follow the instructions outlined below when preparing to apply for a U.S. passport in El Salvador. Do not follow the instructions pre-printed on the passport forms, or in the passport forms site as these are designed for applicants within the United States. For qualified applicants, the Embassy offers adult passport renewal by mail through the local courier service Cargo Expreso. We encourage all qualified applicants to use this service and avoid long delays in setting an appointment and inconvenient travel to the Embassy.
Effective June 15, 2022, if you prefer to receive your passport by mail and not return to the embassy to pick it up, during your appointment you may provide a pre-paid shipping label from Cargo Expreso. You can buy a shipping label at any Cargo Expreso agency, and it will be at that agency where you will pick up your new passport approximately 3 weeks after your appointment. There is no charge by the Embassy for this service, any fees are payable solely to Cargo Expreso.
Reissue of Lost/Stolen Disability, Veteran Disability and no longer issued Lifetime passports require a $15 processing and replacement fee. There is no charge for replacing passes due to normal wear and tear. Call 800-933-7275 and choose option 6 to pay replacement fee and verify current address.
You may apply in person for a passport at the Essex County Clerk's office. Procedures are set by the United States government, which has a Website listing the full requirements for a US Passport as well as the Passport application form, DS-11. The website is www.travel.state.gov.
Paying online and submitting your passport renewal application through the mail is fast, convenient and most of all does not require a trip to the U,S, Embassy or Consulate! Total service times are the same whether you apply in person or via mail, so all adult U.S. citizens renewing their passports are strongly encouraged to use this service.
Passport renewal by mail typically takes 4-6 weeks. If you have a need for immediate international travel, we may be able to issue you a limited validity emergency passport; please schedule an appointment to do so. Be prepared to provide proof of your itinerary or urgent need to travel.
If you will renew your passport via Form DS-82, you can pay the adult passport renewal application fee of $130.00 fee online at Pay.gov via ACH Bank Account Transfer (from a U.S. bank account), U.S. or international credit/debit card, PayPal, or Amazon Pay. This amount cannot be altered. You must pay the fee in U.S. dollars.
Online fee payment is currently available for passport book renewals only, and not for a passport book and passport card combination. If you wish to renew both a passport book and card, please instead apply with DS-11 and book an appointment, as online payments for the passport card are not yet accepted.
You may purchase sending and return envelope at any of the RPX offices listed below, by referencing shipping account number 758053751 and paying for sufficient postage for delivery to U.S. Embassy Jakarta. For passport renewals, the applicant will need to send their current passport at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate with all the requirements, so that it can be voided upon receipt of the new passport. The voided passport will then be returned with the new passport. Please ensure you have photocopies of your bio page and all necessary visas prior to sending your passport at the embassy. You will not be able to retrieve your passport during this process, so please assess whether you can be without your current passport for 3-4 weeks.
